Somatic Experiencing

Healing Beyond Insight

Somatic Experiencing is a gentle, body-based therapy that helps resolve the effects of trauma, chronic stress, and overwhelming life experiences. SE is based on the understanding that trauma is not only about what happened to us, but how our nervous system responded and whether it was able to fully process the experience. By working with body sensations and nervous system responses, SE helps restore the body's natural capacity for regulation, resilience, and healing.

Still Have Questions?

  • When we experience something overwhelming, our nervous system automatically activates survival responses such as fight, flight, freeze, or shutdown. Sometimes these responses remain incomplete, leaving the body stuck in patterns of tension, anxiety, hypervigilance, numbness, or overwhelm.

Somatic Experiencing helps gently access and release these stored survival responses without requiring you to relive traumatic events. Through increased awareness of physical sensations and nervous system states, your body can begin to complete processes that were interrupted, creating greater regulation and a renewed sense of safety.

SE can be helpful for both major traumatic events and the accumulated effects of ongoing stress over time.

  • Many people understand their experiences intellectually but continue to feel anxious, reactive, disconnected, or overwhelmed. That's because trauma is often stored not only in our memories, but in the nervous system itself.

You may know you are safe, yet your body still reacts as though danger is present. Somatic Experiencing helps bridge the gap between what you know cognitively and what your nervous system has learned through experience. As regulation increases, many people find they can respond to life from a place of greater flexibility, calm, and connection.

  • SE sessions move at a pace that feels safe and manageable. Rather than focusing exclusively on talking about difficult experiences, we may explore body sensations, emotions, movement, posture, breath, and nervous system responses.

The goal is not to force change, but to help your nervous system gradually develop more capacity and flexibility. Many clients find the process feels gentler than they expected and appreciate that healing can occur without having to revisit every detail of painful experiences.

  • Nervous system flexibility is the ability to adapt to life's challenges while still being able to return to a state of balance and connection. A flexible nervous system can respond appropriately to stress, recover from difficult experiences, and shift between different emotional and physical states without becoming stuck.

When the nervous system has been impacted by trauma, chronic stress, or overwhelming experiences, it can become less flexible. You may find yourself feeling constantly anxious, on edge, emotionally overwhelmed, disconnected, numb, or exhausted. Even when you want to respond differently, your body may seem to have a mind of its own.

The goal of therapies such as Somatic Experiencing is not to eliminate stress or difficult emotions, but to increase your nervous system's capacity to move through them. As flexibility grows, many people notice they can recover more quickly from stress, feel more present in their relationships, experience greater emotional balance, and access a deeper sense of safety and resilience.

Healing is not about feeling calm all the time. It's about developing the ability to move through life's ups and downs with greater ease, adaptability, and connection.

  • Somatic Experiencing may be a good fit if you feel stuck in patterns of anxiety, overwhelm, shutdown, people-pleasing, emotional reactivity, or chronic stress. It can be especially helpful for individuals who have gained insight through traditional talk therapy but continue to experience symptoms in their body and nervous system.

Whether used on its own or integrated with EMDR and other trauma-focused therapies, SE offers a powerful path toward healing, regulation, and lasting change.

  • "I have come to the conclusion that human beings are born with an innate capacity to triumph over trauma. I believe not only that trauma is curable, but that the healing process can be a catalyst for profound awakening—a portal opening to emotional and genuine spiritual transformation. "
